It is pretty evident that a lot of old money has significant value nowadays. It is true that casual collectors cannot afford to have any authentic old money and notes from the 1800s and early 1900s as their value and consequently price are too high. That's how collecting souvenir cards are becoming more and more popular. Having them you can collect a piece of history without actually paying a high price for it.

As with stocks, gold investors may base their investment decision partly on, or solely on, technical analysis. Typically, this involves analyzing chart patterns, moving averages, market trends and/or the economic cycle in order to speculate on the future price.

Banknote enthusiasts enjoy individualist status; the hobby is regarded as intriguingly different. It has a certain prestige attached to it; people tend to assume that a banknote collector must be well-off - but this is often not the because many attractive banknotes can be obtained for well under 50p each. The hobby has a refreshing dignity to it; the banknote collecting fraternity is generally an honest, friendly community, with a genial camaraderie born of a common interest.

Buy the scarcest coin in the best condition that you can afford. Many collectible gold coins sell near the melt price of gold because there are more than enough around to cover demand. When gold increases or decreases in value, these coins will follow. But the higher the grade, the lower the population and demand will push up the price rather than just following the price of gold.

1899 U.S. Silver $1. The 1899 Silver Certificate is a perennial favorite among collectors; its bold design and relative availability make it a logical choice for inclusion in many collections of silver certificates. These notes were part of the government effort to make use of the vast silver deposits of the western United States. Today most are worth between $40 and $250 depending on condition.

At one time, it was speculated that the notes signed by Treasurer Joseph W. Barr would eventually hold a high numismatic value since he was in office for only 23 days in 1968-69. However, during that period, a total of 484 million notes were produced with his signature. The high quantity produced dictates that the notes will never be considered rare in our lifetime. Interestingly, in 1995, numismatic author Alan Herbert stated, "A $1 Barr note deposited in an interest-bearing account in 1969 would have been worth over $4.00, figuring 6% interest compounded annually. A circulated Barr note kept in a safe-deposit box for 26 years is worth $1 today

1862 U.S. Legal Tender $1 notes. The cost of the Civil War was huge in dollars and lives. To finance the war both North and South turned to paper currency issues. The Union issued $1 and $2 currency notes beginning in 1862. A second issue of 1862-63 added $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Unlike the contemporary Confederate issues, the Union notes were printed in smaller numbers with better specie backing. As the war progressed the notes traded at only a percentage of their stated values; but they also traded at a major premium to Confederate notes. Today Union notes are much rarer than most Confederate issues. The $1 note is the most common. Depending on condition these notes usually sell for between $100 and $1000.

Given that gold is denser than almost all other metals, whether something is made of gold is extremely hard to fake. Simple determination of weight and volume should be sufficent. A coin that is the right size but is not gold, or has too much base metal, will be "light"; alternately, a coin that weighs right will be somewhat larger. (Platinum is unknown in ancient times; platinum is denser than gold, but since it is about twice as expensive, making a fake coin out of platinum would make no sense. In theory, fake coins could be made of uranium, but this does not appear to be a practical problem.)

U.S. Large Size (pre 1928) "Horseblanket" or "Saddleblanket" Notes. All U.S. currency made prior to 1928 is of a larger size than modern "small size" bills, hence the nicknames "Horseblanket" or "Saddleblanket." There were many different series and types of notes printed prior to 1928 by the Federal government, and values range from the very common 1923 $1 Silver Certificates (blue seals), worth from $10 to $100 depending on condition, to ultra-rarities that can be worth tens of thousands of dollars or more. If you come into possession of any "large size" bills, we suggest that you consult one of our currency experts here at CAA-Heritage to help you make a determination of value.
