American Eagle Coins - Are They Worth It?

By Frederic Madore

I would like to cover every aspect of the American Eagle gold coins. In order to keep things short I have only included the major topics detailed as good as possible.

There are special coins that investors or coin collectors can make arrangements to buy. These coins unlike the normal coins will add more value to a collectors collection. These coins are known as the American Eagle Coins.

Unlike other types of coins, the American eagle coins are not sold for commercial purposes. Instead they are issued only to authorised dealers for marketing purposes. Here is a couple of places where you should be able to find these American eagle coins:

- Bank

- Brokerage Companies

- Wholesalers

- Precious metal firms

- Diverse other places approved by the US Mint.

There are also three types of American eagle coins:
- Gold

- Silver

- Platinum

The quality of these coins is amazing. As I wrote earlier these coins are not sold directly to the populace but in proof set. Consequently you must buy them at the current prices for gold and the other alloy they are made from. To make sure they all sell for the same price (according to the market rate of gold and other metal) they have a specific weight that is standard.

It is possible to buy American Eagle Coin in one ounce, one-tenth ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-half ounce denominations.

Among other things, the American Eagle Coins are also known as the American Eagle Bullion Coins. They were first released by the US Mint in 1986. at that time only the only American eagle coins usable where the gold coin and the silver coin that had at one time been in circulation. As for the Platinum American eagle coin they were brought into the open in 1997.

As of now the most expensive of these American eagle coins are those of the gold Saint-Gaudens 1934 20 dollar pieces.

In 1934 the US government banned the use of all forms of gold bullion. At that time the 20 American eagle coins were made from gold. The US government then issued a recall to melt down all the coins. However a few escaped the lot and survived. They are now hunted by every avid collector.

At last If you really are concerned in American eagle coins you should learn to properly recognize them. If you have any in your collection I would extremely advice to keep them safe.

This article was written to provide you with knowledge about the American Coins. I appreciate you taking your time to read it.

Paper Money & Coin Collecting News

Most importantly, collect paper money for fun. As a beginner, don't collect as an investment or for profit. Just buy the bank notes you like and have fun doing it!

The most effective way to get paper money is not through general circulation, but through dealers, collectors, auctions, and shows. About once a week someone posts a message asking for people to trade/buy/sell paper money. Even with the large audience of rec.collecting.coins, you don't reach many collectors. But this is still one way many people get notes.

Central banks and the International Monetary Fund play an important role in the gold price. At the end of 2004 central banks and official organizations held 19 percent of all above-ground gold as official gold reserves. The Washington Agreement on Gold (WAG), which dates from September 1999, limits gold sales by its members (Europe, United States, Japan, Australia, Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund) to less than 400 tonnes a year. European central banks, such as the Bank of England and Swiss National Bank, have been key sellers of gold over this period.

In 1955 U.S. Congress expanded the earlier law that stated that the motto "In God We Trust" could be placed on all U.S. coinage to one that required the motto to be placed on all coins and paper money. However, "In God We Trust" did not actually appear on U.S. paper money until after 1957. Since paper money is not dated yearly, but by series numbers that are based on changes in style and design, Series 1935G and 1935H Silver Certificates bear the motto because they were produced after 1957.

As with most U.S. $1 Silver Certificates, most circulated $5 and $10 Silver Certificates only carry a small premium over face value, ranging from 10% to 30%. Uncirculated $5 and $10 Silver Certificates carry a larger premium, depending on the issue and the grade. There are several significantly scarcer and even rare varieties in these series, however, including the 1933 $10 Silver Certificate, the 1953-B $5 Silver Certificate Star Note, and others, and most Star notes from these series carry some premium (ranging from small to large) over the regular notes. The Gold American Eagle gold coins are made from government guaranteed gold. First introduced in 1986, U.S. Gold Eagles are the #1 gold bullion coin choice among investors across the world. After careful consideration, the United States mint decided to copy the design of the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin for the obverse of its new Gold Eagle. The $20 Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to create coins of awe like the ancient Greek and Roman coins. The date, situated to the viewer's right of Miss Liberty, appears in Roman Numerals in the years from 1986-91 it has appeared in Arabic Numerals ever since.

Fake silver coins may or may not have a silver-plated finish on them. Although higher-quality struck fakes might look pretty convincing if they're plated, many fakers don't even bother to plate the coin! Silver has a distinctive sheen to it that is neither too harsh nor too soft or "soapy" looking.

On my list of "do not buy" coins is those from the Franklin Mint and other premium collectibles mints (such as the Bradford Exchange, etc.) They are aggressive marketers who do sell genuine bullion coins (sometimes) but their coins usually do not have any after-market value among coin collectors and investors. You'll typically pay $45 plus for a one ounce silver coin that is only worth the value of its silver bullion when you go to sell it. (Silver bullion is at about $19 an ounce as I write this.)

There are a host of things to see on coins. No matter what you are looking for, after a quick perusal, most collectors will seek some type of magnification to enlarge their view of the coin they are examining. I travel with an assortment of hand lenses. Close up Magnification of 1877 Indian CentThere is a 20, a 10, and a combination 3/4/7. Beginning with an overall view to address shape, color, and design, a grader will also be looking at a coin's luster and for imperfections that detract from its eye appeal. Error/variety collectors will be looking for doubling on its design, planchet/striking problems, overdates, and overmintmarks. Authenticators will need to look more closely at its surface for die polish marks, tooling, and characteristics common to counterfeit or altered coins.
